Potential of Estate Crops

Estate crops/plantation business in Garut regency is big enough. Sector estate crops in consists of State-owned estates, Private estates and Smallholdings. Area of plantation in Garut regency reached 51,811.54 Ha, which is divided into people's plantation crops or Smallholdings estates 26,501.54 Ha (51.14%), State-owned large estates (PTP) of 12,901.48 ha (24.90%), and private large estate of 12,408.52 Ha (23.94%).
The development of people 's plantation production can be seen from the area and production of various commodities. Plantation significantly participate in the public economy sustainability. Commodities which many people have planted cocnsist of 23 species, and large plantation commodities consist of: tea, rubber, cocoa, and palm oil.  
Institutional farm in Garut regency, to the fruit consists of 365 Farmers Group, 5 fruit cooperative, 3 fruit Association, 10 fruit KUB, and 77 units distiller.
As an illustration, the last data about tax from estate crop sector to reach a value Rp.104.536.124.300. While the labor involved in large estate crop recorded 13,020 people and consists of 10 managers, 86 staff, 9047 of the monthly, and 3,878 people still labor daily, which was issued with a wage of Rp. 7 billion per month. Also noted the operational costs of processing large estates worth Rp 4.5 billion per month, so the total money circulating in large estate is around Rp.11, 5 billion per month.

Classification of Product
Department of Estate Crops Garut classify type of commodity estate crops in Garut Regency with three classification as follow :

1. Excellent Commodity
 
Defined as a competitive commodity in an areas that grow and develop well with the following criteria:
  • Has a role in the foreign exchange market and has a large trade in the local, regional, and global
  • Generally have a certain market share at the international level
  • The local specific commodities that have a competitive and comparative advantage
  • By agro-climate (climate and soil conditions) be able to develop excellent local
Included in the excellent category are: Tea, Vetiver Root, Tobacco, and Coffee

2. Prospective Commodity

Defined as a commodity is grown and the only area to grow and develop properly because agroclimate local support, which economically has started a good market opportunity at the local, regional, and global, and the potential to become excellent commodities, and provides an important contribution to the income farmer producers and local revenue.
Including the category of prospective is: Clove, Ginger, Pepper, Pogostemon Cablin (Nilam), Turmeric, Kaemferia Galanga, Coconut, Sugar-Palm, vanilli, Bamboo and Rubber.

3. Stub Commodities

Defined as commodities grown in a region with area that is not so broad and growing in accordance with local agroclimate, as does the potential for production and can not provide economic benefits and prospects but are prepared towards.

Including the category of prospective is: Cashew Nut, Jute, Kapolaga, Kapuk, Castor-Oil, Pala, Areca Nut, Sereh Wangi, Cinamon Bark, Melinjo, Candlenut, Cinchona, Cocoa, and Palm Oil.
